Wineries

Casa Relvas Alentejo

Casa Agrícola Alexandre Relvas is a family project that began in 1997 and already has the dedication of two generations. The company manages 350 hectares of vineyard and produces 6 million bottles per year, 70% of which are exported to more than 30 countries. In the last 10 years our wines have won more than 300 gold medals in international competitions and have received the highest scores throughout trade press

Maladhina Nova Alentejo

Malhadinha Nova is a traditional family estate located in Albernoa in the heart of Baixo Alentejo. Since 1998, the family’s passion and commitment have transformed a long-abandoned land into fields that can give life to genuine, high-quality Alentejo produce.

The Malhadinha Nova Winery boasts unique characteristics that are ideal for obtaining distinctive wines of the highest quality. It is located only a few metres from the vineyard and takes advantage of the slope of the land so that the whole winemaking process is done by gravity. The grapes arrive in 12kg boxes and are unloaded straight into the modern refrigerated presses.

Here the traditional treading method combines perfectly with technology to make the most of all the potential that nature gave the grapes on the vine. The cellar where the barrels are stored was hewn out of the hillside to a depth of several metres and provides excellent conditions for the wine to age.

Herdade dos Grous Alentejo

In spring the sublime landscape is covered with vibrant colors of green that turn into a luminous gold once the summer has arrived. Alentejo is home to old grape varieties such as ‘Trincadeira’ or ‘Arangonez’ that are producing extraordinary, full-bodied wines. Their earthy flavors and spicy fragrant accents come from a soil that is rich in magnesium and contains predominantly chalk, clay and sand. The regional culinary specialities are simple bread and vegetable soups, as well as delicious and aromatic stews made with free-range lamb, sheep and pork.

The work of oenologist Luis Duarte here in the vineyard is more than just a passion. The establishment of the estate and the cultivation of the vines (1987), as well as the design of a state-of-the-art wine cellar (built in 2005) are all based on the latest findings in high-end viticulture. ‘Herdade dos Grous’ represents the current pioneering spirit of Portugal’s wine-growing business like no other estate.

Cortes de Cima Alentejo

Nestled against the slopes of the 400m Serra do Mendro hillrange of the lower Alentejo, our vineyards enjoy very high sunshine hours with warm, dry summers, tempered by cool Atlantic breezes. We grow our grapes in our own vineyards in two distinct Alentejan terroirs: surrounding our home and winery at Cortes de Cima, near Vidigueira; and at the Atlantic coast near Vila Nova de Milfontes.

Herdade Rocim Alentejo

Herdade do Rocim is a property set between Vidigueira and Cuba, in the Lower Alentejo, covering about 120 hectares, 70 of which are vineyard and 10 are olive grove. After being bought by Movicortes, SA in 2000, the following years brought much restructuring work and requalification of the land – a time when a large part of the vines, which today make the Herdade, were planted. The planting process followed specific criteria, enabling the production of high-quality grapes. The winery is a key element in the Herdade do Rocim project, both in the production of its wines, but also for its aesthetic quality, making it a promotional image for the requalification of the whole region.

At Herdade do Rocim all efforts are directed towards craftmanship with a continual concern for the quality of the wine it produces. After ten years of investing in wine made from already-existing vines, the newly planted vines and the Herdade do Rocim Winery are now part of top-quality, award-winning entrepreneurial initiative.

Herdade do Rocim was awarded the prize for “Revelation of Year” 2008, by Revista dos Vinhos.

Monte da Ravasqueira Alentejo

Monte da Ravasqueira has been linked to the Jose de Mello family for several generations. Located in the municipality of Arraiolos, about an hour’s drive from Lisbon, the estate occupies a vast area of typical Alentejan landscape. It is managed and run by Sociedade Agricola D. Diniz, SA.

The excellent geological conditions and the climate are well suited to the production of some of the best wine that the Alentejo has to offer. A great deal has been invested in planting vines and also in modern winemaking equipment and in meteorological and plant-health facilities.

Monte da Ravasqueira is committed to the production of distinctive quality wines, while it is also engaged in a number or other activities involving the production of cork, olive oil and honey, as well as rearing fine cattle and fattening of black pig from Alentejo.

Joao Barbosa Tejo / Alentejo

The history of our family company, João M. Barbosa, is recent compared to other Portuguese wine companies, but we have many years of experience in the sector. Fruit of this experience is a project with a “sui generis” concept, which promises to surprise wine lovers. They will discover a new wine, and share a whole new wine experience – new grape varieties, new blends, presented in a unique form, and an image conceived around the blue rose, symbol of the company, and the visual illusion images in the new labels.

“Obvious” and “easy” have no place in our company, where all the members of the family collaborate with total dedication to produce the best and most unique wine from our land, both in the Alentejo and the Tejo (regions). Two modern wineries created to produce authentic and distinct wines.

Real Companhia Velha Douro

In 2006 Real Companhia Velha celebrated 250 years of existence and uninterrupted activity on behalf of the Porto Wine trade. Behind, there is a fabulous history and a glorious past. For the future there is the continuous commitment for quality and the confidence of a well established company with the vigour and the vision to make further history.

Since its foundation by Royal Charter of King Dom Jose in 1756, many Kings have reigned in Portugal and the importance of Real Companhia Velha is well demonstrated through the numerous services to the community and the support of the majestic privileges granted by Queen D. Maria I, King D. Joao IV, Queen D. Maria II and King D. Pedro.

RCV is one of the largest owners of vineyard land in the Douro, and comprises of Quinta das Carvalhas, Quinta de Ventozelo, Quinta Aciprestes, Quinta do Cidro, Casal da Grandja, and Sibio. Quinta das Carvalhas and Quinta de Ventozelo are large quintas of 600 ha each.

Quinta do Vale Meão Douro

In 1877, Antonia Adelaide Ferreira, owner of the largest winemaking estate in the Douro, purchased 300 hectares of virgin land at auction from the Vila Nova de Foz Coa municipality. Her dream was to create a model vineyard from nothing, using for this the vast experience she had acquired throughout a lifetime as a Douro landowner. This ambitious project took eight years to complete, from 1887 to 1895. Sadly, this grand lady’s pleasure in her last and most significant enterprise was of short duration as she died in 1896. Since then, the estate always remained in the hands of her descendants.

In the 1970s, her great-great-great-grandson, Francisco Javier de Olazabal became responsible for its management and he began the long and laborious process of acquiring the shares that belonged to his kin and to other co-owners of the property. In 1994, he and his children became the sole owners of the Quinta. Until then, the grapes from the estate were sold to A.A. Ferreira S.A., the company established by Dona Antonia’s descendants, where they formed the basis of some its finest wines.

This connection continued until 1998 when Francisco Javier de Olazabal resigned as Managing Director of A.A. Ferreira S.A. to dedicate himself, together with his oenologist son Francisco de Olazabal y Nicolau de Almeida, to producing, ageing and marketing the wines from the Quinta through a new company, F. Olazabal & Filhos Lda.

Quinta Da Romaneira Douro

Christian Seely and Antonio Agrellos decided in 2005 to construct a new winery at Romaneira, Douro Valley. Most wineries in the Douro are far from ideal, dating back to their 18th or even 17th century origins. This makes them very picturesque, but not very practical. At Romaneira they were able to dig a large hole in the ground and then build the winery, two thirds underground (aesthetically very pleasing but also very practical for storage of wines in cool stable conditions). Their “lagares” are in stainless steel, which means that as well as all the traditional advantages of foot treading grapes for Port Wine, they also benefit from the technical ability to heat and cool them.Their vatroom consists of stainless steel temperature controlled conical vats, which give them the flexibility they need to be able to express fully the personality of the vineyard of Romaneira.

100 Hectacres Douoro Region

100 HECTARES winery was named after its most striking asset, namely 100 hectares of vineyard, contrasting with the small average surface for a vineyard in the Douro. The Brás brothers, Filipe & André ,choose this name in 2009 when they decided to start bottling the wines from the grapes produced in the 4 estates owned by the family for 3 generations, having previously learnt the crafts of vine growing, and bulk wine trade.

Filipe & André not only received 100 hectares from their parents and grand-parents, there was also an ongoing learning of the virtues of hard work and the passion for Douro.

The Brás family has been taking care of their vines for 3 generations, and from the current generation, Filipe & André remain directly in charge of each of their parcels, which makes them true VIignerons, accountable for every grape they transform into wine.

Casa Santos Lima Lisboa/Algarve/Alentejo/Douro

Casa Santos Lima is a family owned company dedicated to the production, bottling and selling of Portuguese wines. The company is present directly or indirectly in the regions of Lisboa, Algarve, Alentejo, Vinho Verde and Douro. This way and from around 400 hectares of vineyards, it produces wines known for their excellent quality/price ratio and exports around 90% of its total production to close to 50 countries in all 5 continents. Casa Santos Lima is also the largest producer of “Vinho Regional Lisboa” and “DOC Alenquer” and in the past years has been one of the most awarded Portuguese wineries in major national and international wine competitions.

Currently the company’s main headquarters (offices, wine shop and the biggest wineries) are located at “Quinta da Boavista” in Alenquer only 45 km North of Lisbon. The estate belongs to the Santos Lima family for more than 4 generations and offers ideal conditions for producing quality wines. Casa Santos Lima also has its own vineyards and winery in Tavira (Algarve) and through agreements and partnerships with other societies and producers it also manages vineyards and wineries in the Alentejo, Douro and Vinho Verde regions.

Casa Santos Lima has a very wide wine portfolio, producing every year and from 5 different regions red wines, whites, roses, sparklings, “frisantes”, “leves” and even dessert wines. This big assortment made up from various different brands, allows the company to flourish in national and international markets and is one of the reasons for a continuous and sustained growth year after year. At the moment, Casa Santos Lima is responsible for the production of around 40% of all the certified wine in the Lisbon Region and it is a major exporter of Portuguese wine.

Herdade Pegos Claros Palmela

Producing very high quality wines since 1920, Pegos Claros Estate Farm was responsible in the 1990s for the production of wines which became renowned national and international as some of the best wines produced in DOC Palmela.

Our wines are produced to the same quality as those produced in the 1990s, with manual vintageing, fermentation with traditional foot treading in open “lagar”, oak ageing and made exclusively from old vines from the variety "Castelão".  Pegos Claros has the largest continuous vineyards of the Castelão variety in DOP Palmela. Planted in sandy soils and having no irrigation, the vines are often more than 90 years old. These factors, together with our viticulture and winemaking processes, produce lower yields but a very high quality end product.

Ribeiro Santo Dao

Quinta do Ribeiro Santo estate, located in Carregal Sal, is a property acquired and restored by the winemaker Carlos Lucas, with the aim of producing wines with his own personality. It was an ancient property of the local priest, surrounded by a stream where water flows all year round, so it was named “Quinta do Ribeiro Santo”, which means “Holy River Estate”.

The vineyard is planted with the local varieties, such as Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro, Tinto Cao and Encruzado, which were planted in poor ground granite, with large rocky outcrops, which overlooks the Serra da Estrela.

The vineyard is planted in an integrated production system, revealing great concern with the environmental issues. The combination of cultural practices associated with the careful use of organic products that respect the environmentally, originates a balanced production.

Quinta da Lixa Lda

The Quinta da Lixa is a living testament to the passion that the Meireles family has always had for Vinho Verde. This family has a number of business interests, and, while still it owned the vineyards around the small town of Vila da Lixa, it decided in 1986 to set up a small firm, and this became what is now known as the Quinta da Lixa – Sociedade Agricola, Lda.

At first the wines produced were sold in bulk, but it soon became clear that their quality and popularity was such that estate bottling was required. The increase in production made it necessary to build new facilities to replace the original winery since this was no longer able to ensure the standards of quality for which the company was noted.
